DeVonta Smith catches the game winning pass from Tua Tagovailoa.

Hosted at the brand new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, the 2018 College Football National Championship was going to be won by someone in the SEC. The national championship was played between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide. To get to this point Georgia beat Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl 54-48 in double overtime, and Alabama got their revenge on Clemson from last year’s National Championship at the Sugar Bowl, winning 24-6. Alabama was coached by Nick Saban and Georgia was coached by Kirby Smart.

From the first drive of the game everything looked great for Alabama as Tony Brown intercepted Georgia QB Jake Fromm. Alabama then concluded to call 11 plays then miss a 40 yard field goal, which was the start of a terrible first half for Alabama. At the end of the first quarter it was 0-0. Georgia scored 13 points in the second quarter and Alabama still had no response to Georgia. At halftime this led to Nick Saban making a very bold choice to the Crimson Tide offense by taking out sophmore quarterback Jalen Hurts, who started every game this season, and replacing him with freshman Tua Tagovailoa.

Georgia and Alabama traded shots in the 3rd quarter as Roll Tide scored 10 and the Bulldogs scored 7, the start of Alabama’s comeback. In the 4th quarter, Georgia was scoreless and Alabama again scored 10. The National Championship was now headed into overtime. Georgia put the first points in OT with a 51-yard field goal. Alabama now had the ball. Tagovailoa was sacked for a 16-yard loss on the first play of the drive; in which the freshman quarterback responded with a 41-yard game winning pass to DeVonta Smith. Alabama won 26-23.

After coaching on the College Football level for 22 years, coaching at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama, Nick Saban has a career record of 223-62-1. Winning six National Championships, Saban has an 132-20 record whilst coaching at Alabama. Under Nick Saban, Alabama has won five of the last nine National Championships since 2009. No longer under the shadow of former Alabama legendary coach Bear Bryant, who as well won six national championships, Nick Saban is now one of the best coaches in college football history.

At Blake High School, there are many fans for both Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide.
