Blake highschool has been fortunate to aquire the help of a Womens USL Soccer team through a mutual sharing of our football field. The team is called The Tampabay Sun FC and they (as we know) renovated our field adding new turf and 3 new sets of bleachers. Both the Sun and the Yellow Jackets will be playing on the new field. Blake plays on fridays and the Sun on saturdays.
The Tampabay Sun are part of the USL Super league, the United Soccer League is made up of 80 teams from across the nation.
new turf incorporates woodchips instead of rubber bits protecting from overheating. The wood chips are sanded down too avoid injuries and cuts. Along with the FIFA aproved field blake will also get a capacity boost from 1800 seats to 5000 seats giving a great view of the hillsborough river! There is also now a walkway along the riverwalk.
All 6 million dollars for field construction was privately funded as stated by Christina Unkel “Getting the area agreed and guaranteed for us to take on ourselves – with no other public dollars, but all privately funded – to finishing that boardwalk on that section near the school.
