Friday, September 1, Blake High will be hosting their first home game of the football season against Wharton. In celebration of the Yellow Jackets home game, SGA will be throwing a tailgate party for students and staff. The tailgate starts at 3:30 in the gym, and the cost is $5. The game starts at 7:30.

Before the game, Student Government is setting up a tailgate in celebration of the first home game. The tailgate will be inspired by Wharton High School itself. “We also have a lot of games…that are inspired by the team we are going against,” said Isaiah Bates, committee chair of the tailgate and Student Government Treasurer. “It’s a very forest type theme for the games because they are the Wildcats, which are native to the forest.”

SGA brought in some ideas from previous tailgates to help them do better at this one. Their biggest hit was Tug-Of-War, which will be one of the many games featured this Friday. They will also bring in foods that were most popular to please the crowd and will include an obstacle course and dance floor.

SGA is hoping that this tailgate will help them for future reference on what they can do if they decide to plan another tailgate or reward the students with a field day. “We’re hoping to see what else we can do for the student body,” Bates claims.

Juniors Kriscia Guevara and Makayla Cleveland-Burnett attended previous tailgate parties in other years. Kriscia said, “It was fun. The food was weird but all in all it was good.” Makayla is on the other end of the spectrum saying “I was disappointed, but hopefully they’ve stepped up their game. If I spend $5, I want $5 worth.” Both students are hesitant about whether or not Blake will come up on top Friday night at the game. “Blake has improved but… it’s Wharton” Guevara commented. “I wouldn’t bet my money on it,” Burnett said. Despite bring unsure about the football team’s chances at winning, Kriscia believes its important to go the games. “If you show more support they’ll win more games; and they will come to our [volleyball] games.”

Football players Khalid Scott and Joey Chatman were extremely hyped when talking about the highly anticipated game. Chatman made a bold statement saying he believes they are going to win because “we’ve got the best defense in Florida.” He adds on saying “as a team, we’ve stayed focus and practiced more,” which is the difference from last era. Scott says “we’ve put in work,” and is feeling positive about the team and how they are going to perform Friday.
