On March 31st, Netflix released a new hit show called “13 Reasons Why”. It has taken over the internet, and is leaving many people tears with broken hearts.

The show, based off of the book with the same title by Jay Asher, follows teen Clay Jensen, as he listens to a series of tapes left behind by his friend and the girl he loved, Hannah Baker, after she decides to takes her own life.

There are 13 tapes. Each one gives a reason as to why Hannah chose this dreadful fate for herself. The character also goes on to reveal shocking secrets about her fellow classmates. The show sends out a powerful message to its viewers and manages to hit them hard. “I believe that the show is trying to explain that the smallest things you do can majorly impact someone. Even if you don’t realize that what you’re doing is hurting that person,” said Ayushi Patel. “It really makes you think ‘Have I done anything that has hurt someone?’ You never really know and it makes you think twice about what you’re doing.”

Singer and actor Selena Gomez, executive producer, felt the need to bring the book to life to portray this powerful message. “What ’13 reasons why’ has represented was an authentic story of what kids deal with every day in life. The pressure, the unrealistic expectations of what they believe should be,” Selena previously stated. “Whether you have read this book or not, it’s a story of what every kid does and goes through-unless we keep talking about it. People are hurting and deserve to be heard.”

“It definitely opened up my eyes. I think it showed the message very well. It showed the negatives that happen in the real world,” said freshman Abigail Roach.

This show has allowed me to view the world a different way. It made me realize that there are so many people out there hurting and we don’t know it. We could be hurting someone with our actions without realizing it until the damage is done and we can’t fix what we did.
