The state of Florida is known for many things, one of which being the yearly hurricanes and tropical storms. Most of the time, the weather systems bring along destruction with then, and this year was unfortunately no different with Hurricane Debby.
- Debby first made landfall in Steinhatchee categorized as a level 1 hurricane on the 5th of August. As it passed by, it caused record rainfall throughout the Tampa Bay region. This resulted in cars being submerged under feet of water and drivers being stranded.
Florida was not the only effected state though, as Debby left many without power in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York, along with other parts of the East Coast. Debby even made it up to some parts of Canada.
“If you live here, you’re pretty used to hurricane season and it being like this, but the last week or two we’ve getting it pretty rough,” said diner waiter Chastity Bettis of New Bern, North Carolina in an interview with NBC News.
Thankfully, there are some positive things to come out of this. The Sarasota County police department managed to save up to 500 families after Debby swept through that area. And in Chicago, residents were able to save nearly 200 pets and animals from death. Additionally, off the coast of Boca Grande, the US Coast Guard managed to save 2 people.
Hurricane season has yet to be over though. There could be another weather system forming in the near future, which could cause more devastation and tragedy. Make sure to take the correct precautions this time of year and stay safe.
