Why is straight the default?
Coming out will be one of the hardest things to do.
–>*WARNING: May Contain Spoilers For Love, Simon*<–
Love is something that everyone experiences in their life. Whether it be love for a family member, a best friend or a significant other, it’s in ones life somehow. Simon Spier experiences all three types of love in the new coming of age film, Love, Simon.
The movie, based on the book Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, follows 17-year old closeted Simon as he meets another gay student from his school, Blue, on Tumblr who also struggles with keeping his sexuality a secret from his friends and family. Simon also has a problem of one of his classmates, Martin, who threatens to use Simon’s secrets as blackmail in order to be with one of Simon’s friends.
Love, Simon was successful in being a non-cliche love story without the overrated plot. It captures the relationship between Simon and his family in such a beautiful way. Simon’s parents and his sister, Nora, were supportive of him when he came out to them. They shared a close bond both together and individual bonds throughout the movie.
Despite the major downhill they experience, Simon and his friends are practically inseparable. Though they were mad at him for a short period of time after finding out he lied to them to prevent him from being exposed, Leah, Abby and Nick stick by Simon’s side through his struggle of accepting himself and the fact that now everyone at school knows he is gay, thanks to a jealous and upset Martin. They even support him when he decides he wants to see what ‘Blue’ looks like behind the screen, even if it does cost him more embarrassment.
When it comes to the relationship between ‘Blue’ and Simon, words cannot express how beautiful and adorable it truly is. Since they do not know who the other person really is or looks like, their relationship is based purely on character and personality. They find love and truth in one another. Even though they hit a rough patch after ‘Blue’ finds out who Simon is, they still manage to continue strong.
The movie did manage to leave out a few important and adorable scenes and characters from the book, like Simon’s older sister, Alice, and the T-shirt that is given to Simon from his online love.
Despite the few missing details, Love, Simon was a complete success. The movie has helped so many young teens, and even adults, with their struggles in accepting their sexuality and has inspired many more to come out to their friends and family. Representation is important for kids and teens these days and this movie is a great representation for the LGBT+ community. Definitely deserves 4.5/5 stars in my book.
